REVIEW: SEND HELP
What a roller coaster leading up to this. I tried to watch all of Sam Raimi’s movies leading up to it, I loved Darkman and Drag Me To Hell but the rest are Ok. I get why people adore Raimi’s work but I am not a mega fan like that. I couldn’t bring myself to watch the Spider-man movies, too corny for me. But I was looking forward to Send Help. Then I saw a special look on Disney+ with the pig hunting scene and it was filled with bad CGI and Raimi’s corniness showing and my expectations plummeted. Then I heard great reviews, but they could have been Raimi lovers so who knew what to expect. So going into the theatre I was unsure what to think.
The film is designed as a dark psychological thriller/horror that uses a classic survival setup (a plane crash on a deserted island) to explore themes of power and control.
The plot centers on an employee (McAdams) and her boss (O'Brien) who are the sole survivors of a plane crash and must battle both the environment and each other.
It ended up being a good movie to on the cusp of being great. Rachel McAdams is always a pleasure to watch and I was worried she couldn’t come across as a believable nerd but she was fantastic. The movie took it’s time to establishing the characters without overstaying it’s welcome before the inevitable plane crash. I was also worried about the corniness of Raimi coming out but it did in good ways and all the things I loved about Raimi were present here. The unexpected plot points and gore was refreshing. I was always wondering where the movie was going. The CGI scene played out and looked slightly better on the big screen.
